In the tropics, a lightning strike does not have to hit your building to destroy what is inside it. A strike to a power line, a neighbouring structure or even open ground hundreds of metres away induces a voltage surge that travels into your premises through power, telephone and data cables. In seconds, that overvoltage can burn out routers, servers, point-of-sale systems, air-conditioning controllers, solar inverters and anything else with a circuit board, equipment that survives the storm itself but not the spike it sends down the wire.

Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and Trinidad & Tobago experience storm activity for much of the year, and the long overhead power and telecom runs that serve homes and businesses here act as antennas for those induced surges. Layered protection: external DDCE plus internal SPDs

Effective lightning and surge protection works in layers. The DDCE system provides the external layer: a passive charge-compensation head that prevents direct strikes to the structure within a radius of up to 100 m, with a 20-year service life and full warranty. But the DDCE cannot intercept a surge that arrives along a cable from a strike elsewhere on the network.

That is the job of the internal layer: surge protection devices (SPDs) installed at the main distribution board and at sensitive equipment, together with DINNTECO Dinfil filters that clean transient overvoltage from the supply. The two layers complement each other:

  • External, DDCE: prevents the direct strike and the fire, structural and electromagnetic damage it would cause.
  • Internal, SPDs and Dinfil filters: divert and filter the induced surges that enter through power, data and antenna lines.
  • Coordinated design: SPDs are selected and staged so each device handles the energy level it is rated for, from the service entrance down to the socket.

Installing one layer without the other leaves a gap. A building with only a rooftop system still loses electronics to line-borne surges; a building with only plug-in protectors is still exposed to a direct strike.

Who needs surge protection

  • Offices and public buildings, servers, network switches, printers and access-control systems all sit on the mains and the network.
  • Telecom and broadcast sites, radios, rectifiers and transmission equipment at the end of long, exposed cable runs.
  • Retail and hospitality, point-of-sale terminals, refrigeration controllers and CCTV that the business cannot operate without.
  • Homes with solar inverters, rooftop PV arrays and their inverters are directly exposed and expensive to replace; DC-side and AC-side protection is essential.

A note for French Guiana

In French Guiana, surge protection is not only good practice but a regulatory matter: the French wiring standard NF C 15-100 makes surge arresters mandatory in high-lightning AQ2 zones, which covers the territory.
